Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton has accused the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) of buying Afro-Guyanese support, as reports suggest dwindling support for his party. Nomination Day for Local Government Elections (LGE) was held today, with political parties, interest groups, and individuals submitting their lists to contest the elections scheduled for June 12. According to reports, the opposition APNU has a poor showing, with low numbers in many of its strongholds, including Georgetown and Linden. Several former APNU candidates, including former Georgetown Mayor Patricia Chase-Green, have also joined the PPP. In response, Norton accused Afro-Guyanese of being bought by the PPP, claiming that many are being paid $5000 to wear PPP shirts. However, he did not provide any evidence to support his claims. General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, is appealing to residents of Georgetown to give his party a chance to govern the city at the local government level when elections are held in June. Speaking to a gathering outside the party’s Freedom House headquarters on Robb Street, Jagdeo stated that since independence 57 years ago, the PPP has never gotten a chance to manage the city. Jagdeo stressed that the PPP has done a remarkable job in bringing about positive change at the national level, and it is now time for them to bring their expertise to the city level. He reasoned that every time the PPP has been in office, the country has moved forward, and more people are getting access to jobs, education, and healthcare. The party is now focused on developing communities across the country.
