"Breaking Barriers: Aliyah Abrams Shatters Records and Qualifies for World Championships in Track and Field"

Guyanese athlete Aliyah Abrams made history on Saturday, April 15th by becoming the first person from her country to qualify for the World Championships in Track and Field. Abrams accomplished this feat by completing the Women's 400m race at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in a time of 50.77 seconds. Although she finished second behind Jamaican Stacy-Ann Williams, who won the race with a time of 50.12 seconds, Abrams's achievement is a remarkable one.

Her time was not only a personal best but also came within a hair's breadth of Aliann Pompey's national record of 50.71 seconds, which was set at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany. The World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, are scheduled to take place from August 19th to August 29th and have a qualifying-standard time of 51.00 seconds for the Women's 400m.

Aliyah Abrams previously reached the semi-finals of the Women's 400m at the 2022 World Championships and finished fifth in the finals at the Indoor World Championships last year. However, if she hopes to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, Abrams will need to replicate or exceed her performance from April 15th during the Olympic Qualification period, which runs from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.

The qualifying time for the Women's 400m at the 2024 Olympics is 50.95 seconds. It's worth noting that Abrams was the only Guyanese athlete to meet the qualifying-standard time for the Tokyo Olympics. It's a tremendous accomplishment for Abrams, and her performance has put Guyana on the map when it comes to international Track and Field events. Fans of the sport will undoubtedly be keeping an eye on her progress and rooting for her continued success.
