Enmore Man Sentenced to Life for Deadly Cutlass Attack on Neighbor
A man from Enmore has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a deadly cutlass attack on his neighbour that occurred almost 23 years ago. The convicted killer, Deonarine Bhikhari, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Jo Ann Barlow at the High Court in Demerara. Let's dive into the details.
Bhikhari was found guilty of the murder of his neighbour, Daniel Singh, on May 21, 2000, at Enmore, East Coast Demerara. Reports suggest that Singh disapproved of Bhikhari’s relationship with his young daughter, and this might have led to the deadly attack.
During the sentencing hearing, Justice Barlow criticized Bhikhari for his actions, calling them "beastly". She emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated by the court and that grown men in any community must help maintain law and order and not behave like beasts.
Despite the jury's verdict, Bhikhari has shown no remorse and has continued to maintain his innocence, "laying blame at everyone else's doorstep except his own". He even fled the country to avoid prosecution.
The impact on Singh's family was severe, with his children dropping out of school at an early age to help provide for their basic needs. However, they expressed gratitude for the justice system, stating that even though more than 20 years have passed, their family has finally received justice.
Justice Barlow ordered Bhikhari to attend behavior modification sessions, including anger management classes, during his incarceration. He must serve a minimum of 30 years before he is eligible for parole.
