In a tragic incident that has left the community in shock, a local singer has passed away while preparing for a performance at the annual Rupununi Rodeo celebrations in Lethem, Region Nine. Dion De Souza, an Indigenous singer known for his country-style singing, was scheduled to perform on Sunday night but unfortunately passed away hours before the concert.

De Souza had been performing his songs for years at the Rupununi Rodeos since his return from Venezuela a few years ago. He was a beloved figure in the community and his music had touched the hearts of many.

De Souza was originally from Moruca, Region One and had been singing since his youth. He had migrated to Venezuela and had even served as a captain of an Indigenous Venezuelan Village called San Flaviano. De Souza re-migrated to Guyana a few years ago and continued to share his love for music.
In fact, he had recently released a new song called “Stranger in my Homeland” and other country songs about his birthplace, Moruca.
