"Satellite Connectivity Provides Critical ICT Services to 35,000 Residents in 93 Villages Across Guyana"
installed satellite connectivity in 93 villages across the country, benefitting approximately 35,000 residents. The initiative, which falls under the WiFiGY platform, aims to provide reliable and free internet access to underserved communities, thereby bridging the digital divide.
One of the recent successes of the project was the installation of satellite internet and IP phone services at the Katoka Village ICT Hub in Region Nine. The new services will enable residents to access high-speed internet, with speeds of up to 10Mbps, for free. In addition, the IP phone services will allow the community to stay connected with loved ones and access emergency services if needed.
The satellite connectivity will open up opportunities for remote work, e-commerce, online education, and electronic access to government services, among other digital services. The NDMA’s efforts in hinterland and remote communities aim to ensure that all Guyanese have access to reliable and affordable ICT services.
The government’s ongoing efforts to provide internet access and communication services in underserved communities have been critical to socioeconomic development in the country. The NDMA, overseen by Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, continues to work tirelessly to bridge the digital divide and foster the socio-economic development of the country.
The NDMA has established new satellite WiFiGY locations at ICT hubs in Batavia in Region Seven and Meriwau in Region Nine, in March 2023. The agency has committed to providing high-speed internet services to all underserved communities in Guyana.
