University of Guyana Student Dies After Being Brutally Attacked and Robbed at ECD Bar

A tragic incident occurred in Guyana where an 18-year-old student of the University of Guyana, Anil Jerry, died after being beaten and stabbed during an armed robbery at a bar on the East Coast Demerara. The incident took place last Sunday when Jerry was having a drink with two female friends in the outside section of the bar.

Several men wearing face masks approached and snatched one of Jerry’s female friend’s cellular phone. When Jerry tried to intervene, the bandits beat him severely, gun-butted him to the head, and stabbed him to the neck. The bandits escaped after firing gunshots, leaving Jerry on the ground. He was rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital, underwent surgery but never fully recovered, and was placed on a life support machine. He was later transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital at Liliendaal, where he passed away on Friday.

Jerry was described as a passionate football lover and dedicated student who was the valedictorian in high school. He hailed from Jawalla, an Amerindian village located in Region Seven. He had applied to the University of Guyana after performing well in his Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams and was accepted to pursue his studies. His family, teachers, and friends were all proud of him.

Jerry’s untimely death has left his loved ones and the community in mourning. His tragic story is a reminder of the need for increased security measures and the importance of ensuring the safety of students and the public.
